The Wayne Difference

As Director, Dr. Dixon is responsible for coordinating international activities at Wayne State University. Key activities include providing international services to all Schools/Colleges by administering global grant competitions for faculty and students to encourage international activity on campus including international student research, student exchanges, and study abroad initiatives; administering the Fulbright and NSEP programs; developing agreements with foreign institutions; providing advice on viable forms of institutional cooperation including academic exchanges and research; and coordinating international travel for Wayne State University delegations. She is the author of numerous articles, including an article titled The Development of a Risk Assessment Instrument for the Prevention of Vesico Vaginal Fistula in Nigeria. Dr. Dixon's research interest is the development of individuals within their international communities. She is a member of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, chair of the WSU Academic Staff Professional Development Committee and president of the Michigan Association of Adult and Continuing Education. She has received numerous awards for service to the university and surrounding community.
As the primary Program Coordinator, Margaret’s responsibilities include arranging housing, airfare, and transportation for students. She works along with program leaders in coordinating program excursions, activities, and student visa processing. Margaret was drawn to becoming a professional in the field of study abroad following her extensive first-hand experience as a student abroad. Margaret studied with two European programs while earning her B.A. in Fine Arts and Communication at Wayne State University. Her initial study began with intensive Spanish language courses at the University of Barcelona, Spain during the summer of her sophomore year. She later studied Italian language, in Italy, through a WSU, faculty-led program during her senior year. Between semesters of obtaining her undergraduate degree, Margaret lived and worked in the Caribbean, where she was able to experience first-hand knowledge of travel and the industry by working in primarily tourism-related positions.
Lisa has been with the Office of Study Abroad & Global Programs since February, 2008. The main component of her position is to facilitate the incoming international exchange students at Wayne as well as support with program logistics for various programs. In addition to Lisa’s position with the University, she also attends WSU as a senior level student in Biological Sciences. Her focus of study is Bio-Diversity and Ecology with an emphasis in Conservation Biology. Most of Lisa’s travel experience centers around the Caribbean, Aruba, and the British Virgin Islands. Future travel plans include South America with aspirations to study the ecology and sustainable industry of this region.
Amberly Chirolla began with the World Bridge team as a Project Manager. Prior to joining World Bridge Amberly worked as an economic development consultant in Washington D.C. and Amman, Jordan. Her projects included global strategic planning and training in the microfinance and banking industry, as well as evaluation of community-based economic development programs in the Middle East. Amberly also worked for three years as the Training Manager for a technology solutions company. By partnering with management and producing a range of training tools, from traditional delivery to just-in-time technology-based training, she doubled the productivity of the Technical Support Call Center. Amberly holds a Master’s degree in International and Area Studies from Brigham Young University. She has lived and traveled extensively in Europe, the Near East and Latin America, and also worked in Costa Rica, where she managed a diverse staff of Americans, Costa Ricans, and Jamaicans. She brings her passion for intercultural understanding and communication to the Study Abroad team.
Fawzi is finishing his education in Computer Animation and Design while working with the Study Abroad Office. He has a vast knowledge of popular trends involved with web-design and digital media. Fawzi originally to Michigan from Yemen during. He has diverse intercultural knowledge and communication skills. He is bilingual in both Arabic and English. His great awareness of all programs sponsored by Wayne State Study Abroad, make him a very thorough peer advisor.
