Summer 2009: June 6, 2009 - June 24, 2009
Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

This travel study seeks to provide students with an intimate, first-hand experience of Afro-Brazilian history, culture and society. Students will be equipped with the conceptual and intellectual tools required to analyze complex cultural and political institutions in Brazil and Latin America, as well as the ability to engage in critical thinking and field observation in the social sciences and humanities. Appreciation for cultural diversity is encouraged through direct exposure to Brazilian and Latin American cultures.

Salvador is one of Brazil's oldest and most famous cities. Formerly the Portuguese colonial capital, Salvador is now the capital of the state of Bahia. Both the city and the state have a large African descendant population (approximately 80%). As a result, the culture (including religion, food, music, dance and social relations) has a strong West African influence. With beautiful beaches and weather, Salvador is also one of Brazil's main tourist attractions.

Since the transition to democracy in the 1980's, Afro-Bahian politicians, artists and activists have demanded greater recognition of the positive black contribution to Brazilian society and politics. Many Afro-Brazilian organizations are based in Salvador. They continue their efforts to improve the living conditions and increase the educational opportunities for Brazilians of African ancestry.
