This program is designed to provide acting and directing students with first-hand experience of the Stanislavsky“system” of acting from master artist-teachers at the Moscow Art Theatre School. Also to provide theatre design/technology, management, or theatre history students with direct experience of scenic/costume/lighting design, management, or Russian theatre history from professionals and master teachers from the Moscow Art Theatre and its associated professional school.
The program is a summer term (four weeks on site) travel-study program at the Moscow Art Theatre School. Moscow is the historical home of Konstantin Stanislavsky’s influential “system” of acting. It is also the home of the Bolshoi Theatre, the Taganka Theatre, the Vakhtangov Theatre and many other professional theatres and training institutes of international distinction.
The program is open to serious theatre students professionals, and teacher-observers and consists of an intensive college credit course. It is open to both graduates and undergraduates admitted to a degree-granting college or university. It is designed primarily with the needs of students in acting, directing or design in mind, but will also appeal to those with broader interests in theatre history, technical theatre or theatre management. This class is for academic credit only and space is limited.
Faculty, scholars, instructors, technicians and artists from the Moscow Art Theatre School provide a program of workshops, practical work, and lectures as well as field studies to Moscow theatres and other sites of theatrical and historical interest.
Because of WSU’s special relationship with the Moscow Art Theatre School, the Department of Theatre can provide master teachers, newly renovated dormitory and instructional facilities, meals, tuition, interpreters, Moscow airport transfer, and access to local theatrical and other historical and tourist sites for a very affordable price.
