Innovation in America and China

This program is the culmination of the undergraduate course ISP 4700, the honors course ISP 5500 and the graduate course ISP 7500: Interdisciplinary Core Seminar, subtitled Cultures, Organizations, and Stories. Spring Break will be spent in China, offering Wayne State University students the chance to witness first hand the profound transitions occurring in the oldest civilization in the world.

As well as visiting international companies in China, students will visit significant cultural sites in the great cities of Beijing, Shanghai, and Hang Zhou, including the Forbidden City, the Summer place, the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, Confucius Temple, the old Marketplace, Silk Road Alley, cultural and art museums, tea and silk factories, and other places of fascination.

It is a time of new beginnings in China. After decades of isolation, China has been admitted recently to the World Trade Organization and is poised to enter into new alliances with the United States. At the start of the 21st century, we find ourselves with the opportunity to build a bridge across the Pacific between people and cultures.

Student Testimonials:

"The China study trip is unlike any other course you'll ever take. Whether your goal in life is to be a CEO or make friendships that cross cultures, this class teaches you how to be successful. Through memorable readings, class discussions and an unforgetable trip of a lifetime to China, these fifteen weeks will develop for you a new innovative frame to see life throug. You will learn to spot opportunities that will help you in all of your future endeavors."

Forever changed and grateful, David Topolewski, Honors Student

"I was amazed at what we encountered in China. We had a chance to study along side of Chinese students at Zhejiang University and were able to tour numerous businesses and even some that have locations in the US and China. What we viewed was equal to watching a history movie about America's transition from farm to factory. I traveled to China a stranger to the land and departed saying so long to many new friends. It was a trip that changed my vision of the world.

Rick McKiddy, MISP Graduate Student and UAW Rep.
