Dimensions of the African Experience

Information on this page is based on last year's program. Prices, dates, and itineraries may change. Please continue to check this site, or send an email to studyabroad@wayne.edu to be notified when next year's information is available.

Dimensions of the African Experience seeks to provide students with an intimate, first-hand experience of African history, culture and contemporary life-styles and developmental challenges; equip students with the conceptual and intellectual tools required to analyze complex cultural and political institutions in Africa and the world, and overall the ability to engage in critical thinking and field observation in the social sciences; encourage appreciation for cultural diversity through exposure to African and foreign cultures; and expose African-American students in particular to the African roots of African-American identity.

This travel\study program is open to both graduate and undergraduate students and is worth 8 credits for undergraduates and 4 for graduates. The program has been in effect since 1991 and has visited Nigeria (1992), Senegal (1995 and 1997), South Africa (1999 and 2000), and Ghana (1992-2005), with shorter trips to Togo and Benin. The 1992 program was planned in collaboration with the University of Lagos; since 1995, however, the program has been operated in collaboration with the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana. On the Detroit side, past trips involved collaboration with Friends for Africa (FFA), a nonprofit community educational organization.
