Summer Homestay Program — Japan

This course, a three credit course, is intended to promote intensive Japanese language immersion, culture studies and global education for students during the summer when Japanese courses are not offered on campus. Students accompanied by the program conductor, will go to Japan in order to experience living with Japanese families in two different cities for two weeks.

During the homestay, students will have the opportunity to experience one full day of Japanese school life and to learn about Japanese society through first-hand experience. They will participate in various activities with their host families, visit local companies and factories to further their knowledge of Japanese culture and society, and , depending upon their Japanese language skills, explore the old capital city of Kyoto independently. The 2008 program will include a day trip to Miya-jima shrine and Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and Park in order to further the participants’ historical and scientific knowledge of nuclear power and the importance of world peace. The students will attend seminars by an Atomic Bomb survivor and Hiroshima Jogakuin University. These program elements, including the intensive preparation including lectures by a history professor prior to the trip, will open the door for the students to absorb new ideas and nurture their young minds while cultivating a broader global perspective.
