Mexico City is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world and the capital of a country that while a member of the OECD, still has high rates of poverty and agriculture remains a significant contributor to the economy. Mexico City has experienced high rates of growth in the past four decades, with substantial spillover of population and economic activity to the adjacent State of Mexico.
As a result, Mexico City experiences many of the same urban problems as Detroit: poverty, traffic congestion, poor housing quality, significant infrastructure deficits and environmental degradation in fragments government structure. The scale of the problems is often greater and the available resources even more limited than in the United States. Combining lectures by leading Mexican academics with discussions with public officials and site visits to observe conditions and projects first hand, course participants will gain insight into these issues and the range of solutions being attempted.
Join WSU's Center for Urban, Demographic and Environmental Studies faculty in cooperation with El Colegio in Mexico City from May 27 - June 6, 2007. The first three weeks of the course will be held on WSU's campus, as well as a meeting after the trip.
